FRIDAY FEAST with Kylie Scott

Grab your survival kits, dear Feasters, because the Zombie Apocalypse is here!Kylie Scott Author Erotic Romance

Well, not necessarily the Z.A., but certainly an author who knows what it’s all about. Kylie Scott is a Queensland gal who loves her B grade horror, the more screamy and blood-splattery the better, and what better horror subject to write about than zombies? Throw in a super scorching love story (not with said zombies – that would be icky) and you have the bones of a cracking debut novel.

Take a look…

FLESH

Ali has been hiding in an attic since civilisation collapsed eight weeks ago.

When the plague hit, her neighbours turned into mindless, hungry, homicidal maniacs.

Daniel has been a loner his entire life. Then the world empties and he realises that being alone isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Finn is a former cop who is desperate for companionship, and willing to do anything it takes to protect the survivors around him.

When the three cross paths they band together; sparks fly, romance blooms in the wasteland and Ali, Daniel and Finn bend to their very human needs in the ruins of civilisation.

Lust, love and trust all come under fire in Flesh as the three band together to survive, hunted through the suburban wastelands.

Doesn’t that sound exciting? Love, lust and trust…ooooooh! Flesh releases October 1st but you can pre-order it right now from Amazon for your Kindle, or from the iTunes store. For other retailers check out the Flesh page at Momentum Books. So hurry up and secure your copy.

Now here’s Kylie!

First up, a big thank you to Cathryn for giving me a spot to celebrate the release of my first book ‘Flesh’.

The idea for ‘Flesh’ came from a mix of my love of Romance stories and all those wonderfully grungy action films back in the ‘80s. Do you remember them? Movies like Terminator and Aliens were my personal favourites, where one lone woman stood tall to the end, fighting the good fight. It didn’t matter how afraid they were, these girls didn’t back down. They fought on with their hair way out of place and without the benefit of tight clothing. Come aliens, the end of the world or whatever, Sarah Connor and Ripley did us proud. Now those women were tough.

‘Flesh’ starts a couple of months after the complete collapse of society. Imagine it, no running water or electricity and supplies would be scattered or scarce. The very thought of existing without the internet sends me running for cover! With the world upended, life might revolve around adapting and just plain good old surviving from day to day. I like to believe in such a situation, love and hope would become more precious than ever. Certainly, the standard rules for dating and wooing need not necessarily apply. And now that I come to think of it, they always said there was safety in numbers…

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Food wise you’d probably be eating a lot of baked beans and tinned soup. Or maybe even those dreaded Military Rations we always hear about. I’ve always wondered if they’re as bad as they sound. To celebrate the fact that hopefully we don’t have to find out anytime soon, I decided to make something packed full of fresh ingredients. I hope you like it.

Feta & Chickpea Salad

400g tin of chickpeas,

drained and rinsed

100-150g of feta, diced

1 punnet of cherry or grape tomatoes, cut in halves

2 celery stalks, diced

2 large carrots, diced

A handful of snow peas, cut into thirds

½ red onion, finely diced

1 avocado, diced

1tspn minced garlic

Juice of ½ a lemon

½ tblspn of your favourite balsamic, French or Italian salad dressing

Combine all ingredients in your favourite salad bowl and mix carefully.

If you like, you can set aside a little of each veg to sprinkle across the top to pretty up your presentation.

Should chickpeas not be your thing, try replacing them with a cup of couscous instead. Delicious!

Nice salad, Kylie! Perfect for keeping that post-Apocalyptic metabolism going….or for a weekend barbecue with family and friends.

Now, my lovely Feasters, Kylie has satisfied your bellies, so how about she satisfies your brain too? Tell us your best zombie fighting food or weapon and you’ll go into the draw to win an e-book copy of Flesh (gawd, I LOVE typing that title!). Baseball bats seemed to work pretty well on Shaun of the Dead, but only with a Queen soundtrack. I think there might be potential for crackers because blowing stuff up is always fun. Except for the mess maybe… Anyway I’m sure you can think of something suitably efficient for fighting those pesky zombies. So get commenting!

Giveaway closes midnight Tuesday, 2nd October 2012 AEST. Open internationally. Rah!

If you’d like to know more about Kylie please visit her website. You can also connect via Facebook and Twitter.  You may also discover her fighting the good fight at Romance Writers of the Apocalypse.

This giveaway has now closed. Congratulations to Juanita who has won an ebook copy of Kylie’s fab debut novel, Flesh. Happy reading! And thanks to everyone else who joined in the Feasty Fun.

Haha! I’m first on the Feast! Go me! Okay, down to business. What I would LOVE in the case of Zombies is a shoot-from-the-hip, pump-action shotgun. In the movies, they seem most effective at dismembering the shambling dudes. But realistically, since I live in Australia and have absolutely no reason to have one, I’m more likely to have to improvise. In which case, I’m going with a cricket bat. We have plenty of those and they have a decent heft to them. I reckon I could take off a rotting head pretty smartly. They’re much bigger than cricket balls. Although, now that I think of it, I might have to invest in a whip. I’m pretty handy with a whip and I fancy myself with a chair in one hand and whipping limbs off with the leather in the other, a la an apocalyptic ringmaster.

Love the salad, Kylie, it looks very healthy and summery. Would now be the time to mention, Cathryn, that I have a book coming out soonish and I make a mean chocolate pie? 😉

Best of best of luck with Flesh, Kylie. Can’t wait to read it!

You realise, Im, that from here on out you shall be known as Whip Wielding Ring Master Imelda the Amazing of the Apocalypse? I quite like it. You’ve got something sparkly to wear though, right? 😉

But seriously. Thank you for commenting and I hope you enjoy FLESH and the salad!

      1. AvatarCathryn Hein

I was quite enamoured of the cricket bat idea. Think of the commentator impersonations you could do to liven things up while smacking a few zombie heads into cover.

Thanks for dropping by, Imelda. Nice hint!!!

      1. AvatarCathryn Hein

Glad you added fire to those arrows, Kez. Arrows spearing straight through is no where near as much fun as a fiery end. Wonder if it’d ignite all their rotting bodily gasses and they’d explode…

  2. AvatarChristina Phillips

Good morning Cathryn and Kylie! I’ve been giving a lot of thought to this pesky zombie invasion (my worst nightmare, btw, just so you know!) and I’ve decided a couple of katanas are the way to go. This means I need to take lessons but I think it would be super cool to learn how to decapitate with elegance and style!

      1. AvatarCathryn Hein

Sexy idea, Christina (as one would expect from a sexy writer gal like you). As you say, very stylish. Add a nice slinky suit to complete the picture and you’d be at the height of zombie-slaying chic!

      1. AvatarCathryn Hein

Hey, Jenny. Lovely to see you here.

Now, come on. I’m sure you could dig deep and find some zombie love. Think how cool it would be to have one of your steampunk heroines fight them!

  3. AvatarLouise Reynolds

    Hey Kylie and Cathryn,
Now I can’t say I’ve ever thought about fighting zombies. But I have wanted to be Linda Hamilton since, well, forever. I’d probably go for zombie fighting food. Maybe the aforesaid baked beans? I shall say no more and leave it to your imaginations 🙂

      1. AvatarCathryn Hein

Haven’t we all wanted to be Linda, Louise. She was awesome.

LOL on the baked beans! Although I suspect a zombie could give us living a run for our money in the stinky stakes…

  4. AvatarAnna Hackett

    Hi Kylie and Cathryn —
Don’t think I’ve ever read a post about zombies and a recipe for a delicious salad. I think I might even try that salad for lunch today!

Well, I’m a huge fan of the movies you mentioned, Kylie. I’d like some big, bad-a$$ guns. Mean looking ones to take on the zombies ala Ripley and Sarah Connor. Oh, and Linda Hamilton’s arms — she was cut in Terminator!

Don’t inlcude me in the giveaway because I’ll have already downloaded my copy of Flesh tomorrow (-:

  5. AvatarJuanita Kees

    Hi Kylie and Cathryn
Eeeek…zombies! No way I’d stand still long enough to let them have me. With the talk of fiery arrows igniting rotting body gases and blowing them to pieces, I’m guessing soup is off the menu? Messy but effective 😀

Good luck Kylie! Sounds like an explosive read. I’ll hide here behind the industrial size soup pot and catch the fall out…yuck.

  6. AvatarSerena Tatti

    Hi Kylie,
I remember the old zombie movies of the 60s on late night TV. At the time they seemed scary, though would be pretty tame compared to now. Since starting my editing business, I’ve had the pleasure of editing zombie books and apocalypse books and decided that I really love them! I can’t wait to read yours, Kylie!!

My weapon of choice would be a tall, dark and handsome hero who’d rush to my aid! ;-P

Thanks for having the lovely Kylie as your guest, Cathryn!

      1. AvatarCathryn Hein

Nothing like a tall, dark handsome hero to come to the rescue, Serena. And unlike, say, a gun he’s multi-use!

Thanks so much for dropping by and commenting.

  7. Avatarkyliegriffin71

    Hi Kylie & Cathryn,

Since so many others have opted for the weapons option I thought I try an energy filled meal to fight those zombies!

Louise took my baked beans idea 🙁 – darn her!

OK, I’m going for a meal high in carbo’s – Potato Bake!

regular potatoes (add sweet potato, half, half if you like)
    a couple of bacon rashers
    a brown onion
one of those mystery tins from your other blog post, Kylie (and hope it’s Cream of Chicken soup)
    a little milk
    a sprinkle of cheese
    pepper to taste

Slice and boil up the tatters.
Chop up the onion & bacon, fry till cooked.
Layer it all in a casserole dish.
Mix soup & milk, pour over potatoes.
    Sprinkle cheese on top.
Bake in 180 oven for 40mins.
    Yummo!

That’s sure to give you heaps of energy to slay those zombies!

    Happy release day, FLESH!!!

  8. AvatarCathryn Hein

Whoops. Just realised I haven’t posted who the lucky winner of Kylie’s Flesh was. Congratulations to Juanita! I imagine she’s having a whole lot of reading fun right now!

Thanks to everyone who joined in the apocalyptic Friday Feast fun, and thanks again to Kylie for being a great guest.
