Now this is an exciting Friday. Not only do we have a most awesome author as guest, with all sorts of indulgent delights and a giveaway, it’s also Book Expo Australia weekend and the final round of the AFL season (for international visitors, that’s our beloved Australian Rules Football).

All happening!

But first, AFL. Have you seen where my darling Sydney Swans are perched? Yes, there they are at the top of the ladder looking magnificent. With the finals just around the corner I’m gathering all my lucky Swans charms, including my knitted octopus and gnome, and rubbing their bellies for luck to ensure we suffer no injuries before the finals. And that we win against Richmond Saturday night, of course!

Having a Ball with the Duke!

Cathryn, it’s always a pleasure to be here to do a Friday Feast post and to talk about my latest release. Thank you again for inviting me!

My new book (out 26th August from HarperCollins Australia and Grand Central Forever in North America) WHAT A DUKE DARES starts out as a road-trip romance as the Duke of Sedgemoor (the daring duke of the title) reluctantly escorts his childhood bugbear Penelope Thorne back to England from Italy. But most of the book takes place in England, allowing me to have fun with high society life during the glittering London Season.

Rogue from GCP siteNot only that, I get to talk about clothes (my heroine’s dress sense plays quite a large part in this story) and sparkling jewels and dancing the night away in the arms of a handsome rake or two. I haven’t had the chance to go wild in society since MIDNIGHT’S WILD PASSION. The two earlier Sons of Sin books, SEVEN NIGHTS IN A ROGUE’S BED and A RAKE’S MIDNIGHT KISS, take place out in the English countryside so nobody gets to go to the ball.

I always loved reading the ball scenes in Georgette Heyer when I was a girl (still do). There’s something so glamorous about the gleam of candlelight and an orchestra playing a waltz, which at this stage was still considered a touch scandalous, and ladies dressed up to the nines in silks and satins. Not to mention all those elegant gentlemen in their black and white.

Rake AmazonDuring the London season, most balls didn’t start until 10pm, giving guests the chance to have dinner first. In fact, being invited to dinner at the hostess’s home before the larger entertainment was considered a signal mark of honor. Then the party would continue until around 3am. No wonder those Regency girls all slept in so late!

Around midnight, a lavish supper would be served in a separate room (you needed a big house to do this properly!). Wine and champagne would flow, and also punch and popular Regency drinks like ratafia and orgeat. Webster’s defines ratafia as “a liqueur made from an infusion of macerated fruit or fruit juice in a liquor (as brandy) and often flavored with almonds.” Orgeat (which was pronounced or-zha, think Zsa-Zsa Gabor) is another almond concoction made with an enormous amount of sugar.

Pardon me, but I think both of these sound quite revolting and I’ll stick to the champagne. At the famous Almack’s rooms, they only served lukewarm lemonade! Something many a Regency hero complains about when he needs to seek a wife in that temple of the aristocratic marriage mart.

The Great Lobster CookbookThe food for supper was a mixture of sweet and savory and there was usually vast amounts of it, including quite substantial items like roast chicken or lamb, pies, seafood, and vegetables. Something that has intrigued me ever since my first Georgette Heyer was the lobster patties that her heroines nibble on. Partly because they sounded scrumptious.

So today I went on the hunt for a lobster patty recipe. This, with some tweaks, is the best one I found. It sounds like a lobster-filled vol-au-vent, which makes sense if you’re in your good clothes, I suppose, although I’d always imagined something a little more like a Thai fish cake.

I hope if you hold a ball and serve these luscious delicacies that you’ll remember to invite me!

Lobster Patties

Ingredients:

8 oz. (225g) flaky pastry

8 oz. (225g) cooked lobster meat

quarter pint (125ml) thick white sauce

1 tbsp. cream

pinch of paprika

1 tsp. chopped parsley

salt and pepper

beaten egg to glaze

squeeze of lemon juice

Cooking Instructions:

Pre-heat oven to 450F/230C ,Gas Mark 7.

Roll pastry thinly and cut into 3 inch (7.5 cm.) rounds.

Line some fairly deep patty tins with half the rounds.

Add the chopped lobster to the white sauce, cream, lemon juice, seasonings and parsley.

Put a spoonful of the mixture into each patty case, moisten the edge of the pastry and put another round on top, pressing the edges well together.

Crimp the edges and make a hole in the top of each patty with a skewer and brush over with a little beaten egg.

Bake for about 20 minutes in the pre-heated oven.

ENJOY!

Don’t those sound delicious? No wonder Regency heroines can’t get enough of them! I can’t offer anyone today a lobster patty in the mail – I suspect food poisoning might be an issue. Ooh! Decadent food, where to start! I was lucky enough to dine with friends at a two-star Michelin restaurant in France. We were so spoiled! We even had our own water waiter, with a choice of waters. The canapés were amazing, the veal I ate sublime. It was all very indulgent, and wallet draining, but we couldn’t help it. We were in France! Sometimes you have to do these things!

So what about you? Perhaps you’ve scoffed truffles in Tuscany, or caviar while dining alongside the Caspian sea. Maybe it was prawns in Australia’s top end. Or the seriously naughty chocolate cake your mum made for your birthday one year. As long as it’s indulgent and special, anything goes!

    When I first met my husband’s family in their native seaside Maine home, they took me out for a birthday dinner of lobster thermidor made with freshly caught Maine lobsters from the nearby boats, finished off with a mile-high fresh strawberry pie.Yummiest birthday I have ever had!

    Decadent meals? Hmm, one of my most memorable was a gigantic meal of lobster with my dad in California. And I’ve had a few glorious high teas around Sydney in my time.

      Wow, V, another big lobster meal. I’ve only had lobster a couple of times in my life and I’ve loved it. Love how it’s quite chewy! Oh, high tea. I love that. We’ve done a few ourselves in our time, haven’t we? Thanks for saying you think duke sounds yummy! Perhaps I should have called him the Duke of Thermidor!

        We used to catch so many crayfish (southern rock lobsters) at our South Australian beach shack that there were summers we whinged, “Not crayfish AGAIN. ” I can’t believe I ever felt that way. I still adore crayfish and can’t get enough. Now I have to wait until I visit my family in SA to indulge, and time it right for the season and good weather so my brother can go diving. Tricky!

          Ha ha, Cathryn. Would you believe, growing up on an avocado farm, we said the same thing about the lovely green monsters? An interesting historical fact – oysters used to be considered poor people’s food in England until the 19th century. Because you could just pick them off the rocks (one shudders to think of the polluted water!), they were cheap and a good source of protein. It’s always to do with supply and demand, isn’t it?

    Congrats on this release, Anna! This book sounds fabulous, and I am adding it to my TBR list immediately!
    I’ve had so many decadent moments and meals in my life I don’t even know where to begin. But the most memorable bite I have ever had was the very first time I tasted foie gras. It was seared and melted in my mouth. My taste buds simply exploded. I was in college, at a restaurant in Boston, and that moment was a turning point in my food journey. I will have to try out your lobster patties recipe. Sounds divine!

      Hi Pintip! Gorgeous Vanessa B always speaks so fondly of you that I feel like I know you already! Congratulations on your Golden Heart final this year! Oh, wow, love the sound of foie gras. I’ve actually never had it although I’ve been to the part of France (the Dordoge) where a lot of it is made. As a consequence, roast goose is quite cheap and readily available. That counts as one of my more extravagant meals – yum! Thanks for saying you like the sound of my duke!

    Lovely to have you both together. By the way, Cathryn, let me say how much I ADORED ‘The French Prize’. I just finished it (so lucky to get an early copy) and it was just my cup of tea, or perhaps I should say my lobster patty and glass of champers. Ooh, la, la! A real treat.

    Miss Anna, these lobster patties sound like a terrific treat too. Like you I was always fascinated by these when I was a teen Georgette Heyer reader. They sounded so exotic. I suspect if I’d been at one of those balls I’d have holed up in the corner scoffing them by the plateful.

    Hm, the most exotic thing I’ve eaten? Many years ago I was in Cairo and spent a few nights in the apartment of an ex-pat working there. When he picked us up to drive us to his place the back seat was littered with little jars of Russian caviar. One of the Russian boats had come into Port Said and there was a thriving black market in top quality caviar and vodka. So for the next several days breakfast consisted of fresh (still warm) flat bread with lashings of finest caviar. That was so indulgent!

    Congratulations on the release of ‘What a Duke Dares’, Anna. I loved this book. The tension between Cam and Pen as they travel home, trying not to give in to the feelings between them is just magnificent. This one is a real treat of a read.

      Annie, thank you so much for those kind words about Duke. I had fun writing these two! It’s the old irresistible force meeting the immovable object! Ooh to the caviar! That’s definitely Regency ball-worthy. Like you, I suspect I would have been in the corner noshing the lobster patties. I think they sound really delicious. I’m fond of a seafood mornay! I’ve got Cathryn’s French Prize on the top of my TBR pile. I want a good clear day so I can just wallow in her brilliance!

        That’s a wonderful story about the caviar. Just the sort of thing to include in a book!

        We’re bit of a mutual admiration society here. Annie’s DAMASO CLAIMS HIS HEIR is next on my to be read pile and I plan to nestle down to WHAT A DUKE DARES this month too. Always a joy to support fellow authors, especially gorgeous ones like you two!

    Anna, I have loved all your books and your Sons of Sin series is fabulous – so looking forward to reading What a Duke Dares.
    Those wonderful London ballroom scenes are part of the enjoyment for me of reading Regency-era set novels. Love them! I enjoyed your your description of the meals and how it was all organised.
    Decadent meals? My most recent would be actually in London last month. I was on a quick family visit and one of my dearest friends (my bridesmaid!) took me out to dinner at a very fashionable restaurant in the heart of London to celebrate my birthday earlier in the year. The Michelin starred restaurant was Scandinavian inspired and the meal was delicious–best tomato salad I have ever had–and the service superlative. While we were waiting to be seated we were served appetizers. I enjoyed the crunchy wafer-like shards of some delicious snack without knowing what they were. It was a bit of a shock to find they were deep fried fish skins! They were served with bacon flavoured popcorn, also very tasty. Popcorn is fashionable, apparently, I noticed it featured in other dishes on the menu too.

      Anna always teaches me something new with her posts (and books). Imagine the balls starting so late! I’d have to sleep all afternoon just to make the kick-off.

        I remember as a kid reading the Georgette Heyers and thinking the heroines were SOOOOO lazy because they didn’t surface until noon at the earliest. But once you see those times for the parties, you can understand it!

      Kandy, thank you for saying you’re enjoying the Sons of Sin books. I’m just putting the final touches to the fourth in the series, A SCOUNDREL BY MOONLIGHT which is out late next April. Ooh, that dinner in London sounds great. Interesting that a Scandinavian restaurant is so trendy there. Northern European food definitely wasn’t at all fashionable when I lived there. The problem with people sharing their wonderful eating experiences with me is that I’m hungry. Good thing I just made a huge batch of chocolate chip cookies for an outing tomorrow. Just hope there’s some left for my guests!

    HI Anna and Cathryn – what a tasty post! 😉 Congratulations on the release of the next Sons of Sin story, Anna! The first two were fabulous so I have no doubt that WHAT A DUKE DARES will be a rollicking good read. I already love the sound of the independent-minded Penelope!

    The information about those drinks served at Regency balls is really interesting. Though neither of them have me wanting to rush for a taste! And I have to say that my guess for the pronunciation of “orgeat” would never have come close to the correct way to say it!

    But those lobster patties definitely sound like a tasty treat! YUM! In fact, seafood comes very high on my tasty-treats scale! We’ve had gorgeous grilled barramundi in the Top End, fresh caught scallops here in Melbourne ( I know they were fresh because we caught them ourselves), and I remember when I was a child the deliciousness of a prawn feast after Dad had caught them.

      There is nothing like fresh seafood and even better when you’ve caught it yourself. ALWAYS tastes better then!

      I always said orj-ee-at when I saw it in books. Was interested to see how far from correct I was! Yeah, they sound pretty urk, don’t they? But I’m with you on the lobster patties. At this stage, nobody’s dancing. We’re just sitting in the corner hoovering up the lobster patties! Oh, the seafood feasts sound wonderful. I remember my brother catcing mud crabs in Moreton Bay and how fabulous they were freshly cooked.

    Hi Cathryn and Anna! So much book goodness around at the moment. Congratulations on the releases, ladies! Most decadent meal was in France many years ago, a Michelin starred restaurant NE out of Paris (can no longer remember the name or location as we were driven there by our hosts). However, most fabulous meal with elevated serving platter of seafood with everything imaginable on it – and did I do it justice. I won’t go through the rest of the meal but when we left, the chef met me at the door with a beautiful stoneware terrine (containing a terrine), wrapped in a spotless linen cloth and presented it to me with the words, ‘I love a woman who knows how to eat’. I think he meant I was a greedy-guts. Alas, since we were travelling I gave it to our hosts.

      Louise, there are so many great books out this month! Great to see so many Aussies on the shelves! Wow, I love that story about your French meal. Sadly, I’m a woman who loves to eat too! Clearly we need to have a meal together some time and see who wins the title! I remember two wonderful seafood meals in France when I travelled there in 1985. One was in a tiny little town on the Loire, the other was in La Rochelle. With both, I ate things I’d never eaten before. Amazing shellfish! You needed a special little instrument to get the meat out of the shells. Covered myself in debris. Ate for hours. But man, was VERY happy at the end of both meals!

        Oh, your chef experience sounds wonderful, Louise. And that chef! Do you still have the terrine? I still have a china foie gras container from France. It’s one of my most precious things. We use it for butter now.

        REALLY need to stop talking about seafood. I’m hanging out for crayfish and it’s a long way to Mount Gambier for a feed!

        It is interesting, isn’t it, Anna? Maybe because a lot of the luscious seafood we like is expensive. Speaking of which, we used to barbecue abalone at our beach shack. Must have eaten a small fortune in it.

    Just recently I had the most decadent meal, a 7 course degustation at a stunning restaurant in beautiful Mount Kembla. One of the best birthday dinners ever actually it was also hubbies and son-in-laws birthday, the three of us share the same day, we love it but it’s a little hard on the daughter LOL.

    Unfortunately I haven’t read one of your books yet Anna but they’re on my to – buy list. What a Duke Dares sounds fabulous and definitely a book I would love to read. But it’s the third book in the series is that right? So then I must see if I can find the first one before reading What a Duke Dares. Congrats on the release!

      Sue, that meal sound fabulous. A real experience! Happy birthday! I recently had a birthday too and had a wonderful lunch at the Sirromet Winery at Mount Cotton. Views to die for (or dine for!). Thanks for saying you liked the peek at Duke. It actually stands alone although it links to the other books – but don’t let me dissuade you from trying the whole series, LOL!

          Definitely Cathryn! I thought I had read some Anna Campbell books but when I checked my read list it was Anne Gracie that I had read, so I have to get my butt into gear and go find me some Anna Campbell lol.

          No, no parties as such ye,t we find it easier to book a fancy schmancy restaurant and now that we love Rubys (restaurant at Mount Kembla) so much we head there for special occassions. I woud’ve mentioned what some of the courses are named but they are a tad difficult to pronounce and to remember and if I mention what we ate it just won’t do it justice unless I can describe it like a poet, LOL. I have pics but no camera icon on this comment post, so sad! Lol.

          Cathryn I have to say again congrats on your release, I can’t wait to read your book, it’s sitting on my coffee table and not going anywhere ’til I’ve read it! Then it will take pride of place on my top shelf (which is eye level) where I keep my Aussie rural, contemporary and crime/thriller authors. Ooh and when I buy Anna Campbell’s books I will have to make some space for Historical Regency Romance.

            I’ve been checking out Ruby’s on the net and it looks beautiful, Sue. We’ve just bought a new car and are planning road trips. I suspect a trip down Wollongong way might be on the cards. We’ve also yet to travel along the spectacular Grand Pacific Drive, and must make amends!

            Thanks so much for the congrats re The French Prize. How lovely to have a special Aussie shelf. You’ll definitely have to make a space for our historical romance authors. We have some of the best!

              I love road trips! My hubby Steven and I are always checking out maps to see where our next trip will be, it’s so much fun.

              Once you travel along the Grand Pacific Drive it’s also a must to check out Wollongong Harbour and the Blue Mile Walk which starts at the harbour and there’s also a walk around the lighthouses. Lots of cafe’s and restaurants along the walk too. I’m sure you’ll fall in love with Wollongong. We love it!

              Cathryn, you and Jim will love Ruby’s. Scott the chef is so sweet and his menu is to die for! We’d never heard of Ruby’s until our daughter wanted a fairytale wedding in the country and her research took her to Ruby’s. Oh and Cathryn you can also book a private room to dine in, it’s gorgeous in winter when the wood fire is going. We love the private dining room we’ve booked it twice already. We’re having our christmas lunch at Ruby’s this year but in the main dining room this time, thought we’d be sociable on Christmas day and it’ll be more fun too, lol.

                I used to travel to Woolongong and surrounds for work, Sue, but it’s been a long time since I’ve visited. Really must get back there because it’s beautiful. Now it sounds like there are even more things to see and do. And there’ll be some speccy golf courses for us to wear all our dinners off on.

    I am so looking forward to reading this one Anna I am saving it for when I can sit and read it all at once 🙂 I have a busy weekend this weekend I was at the book expo yesterday and will be back there this morning and looking forward to it 🙂

    I love the sound of these lobster patties probably the mst decedant thing I have had is the Lindt Dome of Decadance which is a chocolate lindt ball filled with lindt ice cream and then you pour hot chocolate over the top to melt the dome of and you can have caramel cocolate or berry flavoured yummo

    Always love your books and this is a great series.

    Most decadent indulgence? This is more about the atmosphere than the food. On our honeymoon in Hong Kong, my husband and I went into a fancy restaurant late one evening. We were the only ones there. The waiters were dressed as Regency footmen and the maitre d’ wore his tasting cup on a chain around his neck. Even though we were the only ones still dining, they recalled the singer and pianist who played just for us. We had a simple meal but my most vivid memory is of my husband doing the ‘waiter thing’ with an oversized pepper grinder, knocking over my wine and the flurry of waiters who immediately descended and apologised (for his accident!) and moved us to a clean table! Felt like royalty!

    Hello ladies,
    I Have to be honest and say that the drinks offered sounded delicious to me. Perhaps it’s because they include almond and fruits and to me that’s the perfect combination. Not to mention when it comes to food I’ll try anything at least once.
    I have the pleasure of leaving in a town where a small albeit lovely French restaurant serves the most delicious lobster crepes I’ve ever tasted. I’ve only been there a few times but the food is amazing!
    That lobster patties recipe sounds great. I’m going to have to try it real soon.

      Wow, Joanna, lobster crepes? Where do I sign up? That sounds fantastic! Ha ha, we have one taker for the Zsa Zsa orgeat! Clearly Regency people liked it or they wouldn’t have served it so often.

    Congrats on another release! Can’t wait to read it (right after The French Prize!).

    I know there have been many comments about lobster but…

    When I was in my late twenties I sailed with a bunch of girlfriends around the British Virgin Islands. We spent all our money renting the sailboat so we had little left for food. Needless to say we were ALWAYS hungry.

    One late lazy afternoon we sheltered off of a very small unmapped island. At first it seemed flat and uninhibited but upon a bit of exploration we found it actually contained a house with a man and his wife who invited us to dinner. We jumped at the chance to fill our bellies-even if they offered us stone soup it would be better than nothing!

    We went back to the boat, cleaned up, found a bottle of white wine and returned to the house. (A few of us were really happy to see that it wasn’t a group hallucination.)

    They had bbqed a fresh caught lobster in butter for each if us and made a potato gratin to go with it. I know I was famished and dust would probably have tasted sweet but that lobster melted in my mouth it was so fresh and delicious.

    We offered to come back with payment but the man said how could he charge for something given by nature and if we truly wanted to pay him back that he would prefer we feed someone else who is in need in future…a pay it forward, so to speak.

    The lobster was decadent, but the memory is more so.

        What an adventure, Dee! That sailing trip sounds a blast. And what amazing generosity from that couple, and with a beautiful attitude too. How magical. I can understand why it’s stuck in your mind for so long. That’s a memory impossible to forget.
