Ciao, to another magnifico Friday Feast! This week we’re going postal. Oops, sorry. I mean COASTAL! And a little bit Italian. Read on…

But before that, because I know you’re hanging out for it, news from Us Heins Weren’t Meant To Play Golf. Last weekend saw the final round of the Club Championships in which I did not (read that: NOT) embarrass myself… much. Well, I did a little on the 3rd. And quite badly on the 11th but the rest wasn’t too cringeworthy. Overall it was a mighty 3rd placing, but only because the lady running 3rd had to retire.

On to far more interesting things. Today’s guest has fairly body surfed her way onto to the best-seller lists. South Australian romance author Victoria Purman has rapidly become one of Australia’s favourite coastal romance novelists, and with good reason. Her stories are warm, romantic and filled with humour as well as drama. Confession Is Good For The Foodie Soul

Dear Friday Feast Fan,

I have a confession to make.

I’m scared. Terrified. I can barely type for the nerves.

And why? When Cathryn asked me to return to Friday Feast I immediately said, ‘Hell yeah!” because she is lovely, fun, a gorgeous writer and a fellow South Australian (even if she is, inexplicably, a Sydney Swans fan).

Then the panic set in. OH, THE PRESSURE! I’ve been watching everyone else’s Friday Feasts and drooling, in the same way I do when I watch cooking shows, in the that-looks-fantastic-and-I-know-I’ll never-ever-cook-that-in-my-real-life kind of way.

You see, the husband and I have three teenage sons and you know what that means? Industrial size catering. Food, and lots of it. They don’t care if it’s not fancy. They will eat almost anything (except son number three who hates parsley and avocado).

On the occasions when I do prepare something nice, it’s usually a plate of nibbles to share with friends. That’s how we tend to catch up with people these days, shared plates, lovely wine and afternoons watching the sun go down.

So, in honour of my latest heroine, the feisty, Italian-Australian Dr Anna Morelli from ‘Our Kind of Love’ (who, unlike me, is an amazing cook) I’m going to do two Italian-inspired nibbles. Yes, I believe that’s the technical term for them.

They’re damn easy and incredibly tasty. And I know they’ve been around a while, but you may have forgotten how easy and delicious they are.

Tricolore Bites

The Italian flag is red, white and green and so are these delicious morsels.

You’ll need Baby bocconcini (those little white balls which come in brine), fresh basil, cherry tomatoes and toothpicks. Slice the tomatoes and the bocconcini in half, rip a basil leaf from the bunch and slide them all onto the toothpick.

Prosciutto and Melon

This one is best done with ripe rockmelon, so buy one a few days before you need it and let it ripen. Grab some thinly-sliced prosciutto from the deli section of your supermarket, cut it into small strips and wrap it around the chunk of rockmelon. Thread through a toothpick to keep it together and make it easier to pick up. The sweet, juicy melon and the salty ham make this a fab combo.

And to wash it all down, I’d go with a South Australian white. This one’s a Sauvignon Blanc from the Adelaide Hills. Because I am a South Aussie, after all.

From one South Aussie to another, that  sounds delizioso, Victoria! And a super easy way to prepare food for when friends come calling. After all, who wants to be stranded in a hot kitchen when there’s company (and wine!) to be enjoyed.

I know it’s looked down upon by some foodies (silly people), but I adore melon and prosciutto. It’s lovely in the summer as a refreshing morsel but also as a tasty feature in a salad. And mozarella, basil and tomato is a classic that is simply too perfect to ever be criticised.

    Hi Victoria and Cathryn!

    Those two nibbles sound amazing and my kind of cooking, now that’s something I can prepare without a fuss in the caravan! My easy peasy treat to prepare in a hurry is a corn relish dip. A jar of corn relish tipped into a glass bowl add sour cream and stir and you have one scrummy dip. To go with the dip I buy an assortment of crackers.

    I was at our Lifeline Big Book Fair last month and not only did I find and buy many Aussie rural books but Victoria your Nobody but Him novel was amongst them and I just had to buy it! I’m still amazed that people can give away such treasured books. Your book is going on my special shelf & staying put. Can’t wait to buy the other two, I will hunt for them next time I’m in Big W.

      Oh yes, these would be perfect caravanning food. Easy to prepare and lovely to eat. The corn relish dip sounds tasty. I think my godmother used to whip up something like that too. Delish with a couple of crackers.

        Thanks Cathryn! It’s an enjoyable and fascinating blog always delight in visiting!

        I’ve just dug around in my recipe folders and found what I already thought was similar to Victoria’s Tricolore Bites so I just have to reveal this lovely quick snack which is named Bruschetta. Instead of putting Bocconcini, tomatoes and basil onto a toothpick you place the bocconcini and tomato into a bowl and add 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar and 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil. Heat garlic bread slices in oven until golden. Spoon tomato mixture onto bread and serve garnished with basil. And it really is to die for!
        Victoria’s nibbles and a copy of the Bruschetta is now in my folder and will go straight in to the caravan tomorrow morning ready for when we set off again!

          I bet that bruschetta is to die for, Sue. It sounds beautiful! So many things for summer. Just waiting for my basil planting to get up to speed and then there’ll be no end to the Italian goodies!

    Hi Victoria and Cathryn. Enjoyable reads from both of you. I especially like your simple treats, Victoria. I have a bit of a sweet tooth. Well okay I’ll tell the truth and admit it’s a major sweet tooth. My simple treat is to mix a variety of berries in a bowl and top with a dollop of raw pavlova mix. You know, sugar and egg white blended until peaks form. Yum!

    Hi Cathryn and Victoria, and a big congratulations, Cathryn, on a very creditable 3rd placing in the golf club championships! Victoria, “Our Kind of Love” sounds delightful, as do those nibbles. I do love a plate of cooked and peeled tiger prawns with dipping sauce for delicious and super easy summer nibbles – fresh oysters go down a treat, too. In winter, I like a square of haloumi, a slice of chorizo and a cherry tomato on a toothpick, baked in the oven for about 10 minutes until the haloumi is slightly browned and the chorizo is sizzling. Both nibbles go very well with wine, too!

      Thanks, Christine! I may make a golfer yet. Then again, perhaps not. Oh, well. At least it gets me out of the house.
      YES PLEASE on the prawns for nibblies. Very hard to go past those. Those haloumi and chorizo sticks sound delicious too. I must try that. It’s really appealing. Haloumi is beautiful when grilled and the sticks would work a treat with drinks.

    Hi Cathryn and Victoria! Congratulations on your Boys of Summer series, Victoria – fab reads. As to nibbles, we’re prawn people too. Always have a big bag of frozen raw tiger prawns in the freezer so we defrost and flash fry, either Spanish style with a little tomato and garlic, or just with a squeeze of lemon. With a dish of olives, that’s about it. Love some of these suggestions from other readers!

      ooh, I agree, Louise. Prawns are so good to have on hand. You can whip up super fast finger food and even meals with them, all straight from the freezer. Which reminds me, I need to hunt down the grilled prawn with lemon and paprika marinade recipe I made one Christmas that everyone loved so much. Dead easy and wonderful with a glass or two of pre-lunch fizz. That reminds me, the silly season is coming fast. Must prepare!
