Welcome to the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge, a year-long challenge set by the good folk at Long and Short Reviews that anyone can participate in. Want to see who else is playing along? Visit here and click on the Miscellaneous Musings link near the top of the page.

As you’ve probably determined from the title, this week’s topic is

One Skill I Wish I Had But Don’t

Hooly-dooly, these topics seem to be getting harder. I suppose it is meant to be a challenge though.

Hmm… what skill would I love to have?

I wish I knew how to design my own website. I like this one. The colours are bright and clean and suit my brand, but the site is getting a bit on now and the list of things I’d like to change and add keeps growing. A shop would be nice, for example, and I’d change the layout of the book pages and probably the home page too. I’d also put the subscription form for this blog at the top of the page, above the book covers, instead of below, and make my newsletter signup more prominent because I adore newsletter subscribers. They’re clever, darling book-lovin’ people and I do cherish them so.

Computer Rage pop art picKnowing how to do this stuff would also stop me hyperventilating every time I accidentally crash my website. Something that happens with horrible regularity and is made worse by not having a clue what it was I did wrong.

Doing it myself would also save money. Websites can be bloody expensive. This one was done as a favour by a friend and even then the cost made me wince. Yes, yes, I know there are platforms like Wix and Weebly out there but they’re not all beer and skittles. And call me precious, but I’d like one designed and tweaked just for me. Which I would be able to do, if I had the skill.

Except I don’t and I’m not about to learn because I’d much rather be writing kissing books.

Or playing golf.

Or cooking, restauranting, cheering from my beloved Sydney Swans, or any number of things that does not involve shudder-inducing technical computer stuff.

Best to leave that sort of thing to the experts.

What skill do you wish you had?

The website skill is admirable. I wish I had it too! But the skill I wish I had most of all is to sing. I love singing but I’m an ordinary singer. Good singing always blows me away.

Gah! Now I wish I’d thought of that one too, Malvina. Singing brings so much pleasure, to both those who make the music and those who listen. I’m with you. Great singing is something very special.

Cathryn, what a practical skill. I’d love to be able to sing. I can’t hold a tune and I love music so much. Malvina, clearly we were meant to be friends!

Cathryn, I love your website, and it’s so easy to use and your books page is set out perfectly, always love it when the publishing date is added makes it easier to read the books in order and the ‘read more’ with its added Testimonials, Read an excerpt and The story behind is awesome and so clever.

I also would love to be able to sing, there are a few women at my church who sing like angels, I’m the only one who has an awful singing voice, not fair and why me? LOL. I would also love to have the skill to write beautiful reviews.

Thanks so much for the website love, Sue. That’s great to hear. But yes, I do have plans to fix the books page and make it easier for readers to navigate the Levenham series in particular. A task for when I finish this book. Along with a whole backlog of others.

I agree with the not fair on the singing. It’s such a terrible thing to suffer for people who adore music!!

What a great skill to be able to have… and y’all… I’m with all of you on the singing. I have a good “choir voice”… but I would love to be able to sing solos. I love musical theatre; however, I’m always fated to be in the chorus. My post, if you want to come by, is here.

Yes, programming or anything computery is almost a must skill these days, isn’t it? Certainly it’d make life easier for a lot of us. Ah well. We can’t do everything!

I’d like to be at least a little bit artistic. I was politely asked if I would like to discontinue Art in first year high school. I’m now almost 71 and still can’t put two colours together as they will clash, and as for drawing anything, even my stick figures are weird.

LOL on being asked to discontinue art, Jean! A bit mean though. Who’s to say your style art wouldn’t find appreciation? And if it gives you enjoyment, whether you’re good at it or not doesn’t matter. Anyway, it’s all subjective.

I had Goddess Fish design my first website and I maintained it, then DH took it over because he understands HTML. I’m glad he does because I’d get one little line of code wrong and BA-BOOM!! So I get it. I wish I did understand it better, but I’d rather be writing naughty scenes, too. 🙂

OMG! Yes to the website designer! Gosh, I never understand any of the background techno stuff. Yet I’m blessed to have such a wonderful (and patient) designer who can do all those pretty things I want done. 🙂 Great post!

That was a smart move, Tena. Well done. Hmm. Maybe I should look at doing something like that. Even if I don’t get to your expertise, it might stop me crashing my site whenever to do something weird.

I know some rather basic HTML and CSS, but not enough to design anything better than a Geocities site. Hahaha. It’s definitely a great skill to have!

    1. Cathryn HeinCathryn Hein Post author

It sure would be a handy skill to have, Aymee. I taught myself some very basic coding but have never used it on this site. I’m too terrified of breaking it!

Being more tech savvy is something I wish I was, too. And GREAT ideas for redecorating your place. 🙂 I just redecorated over at my place and am still not sure I’m in love with it.

I wish I had the time to learn more about this stuff, Dixie. But writing must come first.
Thanks for dropping by. By the way, I love the purple on your site. Very imperial!
