THIS WRITING LIFE: Feeding my inner horsey girl

Last Friday I scooted off to the Melbourne showgrounds for Equitana, Australia’s “Premier Equine Extravaganza” and full-on horsey-fest. I’ve never been to one of these before and had no idea how huge it would be. The place was packed, not just with people but with stalls and demonstrations and everything you can imagine related to horses. In other words, bliss!

I took lots of pics to moon over later in the privacy of my own home but some things, like lovely horses, are meant to be shared. So here is a little of what I saw…

Too cute for words horses!

Magnificent horses.

Action horses

Fancy horses.

Superstar horses. Well, Black Caviar’s (aka Nelly) compression suit anyway.

Curious baby horses

Mechanical horses (for training jockeys)

Want one for my backyard horses

And by the end of the day, this is exactly how I felt. Zzzzzz.

Yes! Black Caviar wore this during her flight to England to race at Ascot. They figured if it was good enough for we humans to wear compression stockings to help prevent the dreaded deep vein thrombosis, it was good enough for Nelly! I think I recall some of the Olympic horses wearing compression suits too.

Friends of mine flew down from Cairns for the weekend at Equitana and loved it! They went last year when it was in Sydney and are planning on heading down again next year. I think it must be like the Avalon airshow for pilots or the RWA conference for romance writers! Food for the soul 🙂

I sat next to a girl from Cairns on the train, Helene. Poor thing was freezing.

It was amazing how far people had come and how many were doing all four days. I was stuffed after one.

But yes, definitely one for the dedicated horsey people. Am definitely going to Sydney Equitana next year. As you say, it’s food for the soul!
